Like a traditional magnet, the electromagnet has the same objective: to attract metallic objects. But this device has some advantages over the usual one.

We already told you in a previous article what an electromagnet consisted of and what its parts were , so today we explain how an electromagnet works.

How does it work
an electromagnet?

The magnetic field generated by a wire carrying current can be boosted by having the wire in a spiral shape, increasing the path of the current and therefore boosting the magnetic field. This is what is known as an electromagnet .

In order for the direction of the magnetic field to be the desired one, the wire is wrapped around a magnetic conducting material so that this field takes the direction of that material.

Advantages of the electromagnet
about other magnets

An electromagnet has different advantages over conventional magnets:

  • Ability to have a variable magnetic field: this is possible because if alternating current is passed through the spiral, when the current has one direction, a magnetic field will be generated in one direction and vice versa when the current changes direction.
  • Ability to connect and disconnect depending on the need: it is not that it is working all the time, but that when the current stops passing through the spiral, the magnet stops working.

Advantages of the electromagnet
about other magnets

As we have mentioned before, there are many advantages of the electromagnet. To begin with, they are perfect pieces when we need a variable or momentary magnetic field .

In addition to being a basic part of a motor , electromagnets are very useful in other sectors and fields:

Now that you know what an electromagnet is, its parts, and how it works, it could be said that you are already an expert in the world of electromagnets.
