Electromagnets are made up of different elements and parts. Knowing each of them will help you better understand their operation and maintenance. In this article we review the main parts of an electromagnet . But first, what is an electromagnet ?

What is a
electromagnet?

An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by the flow of an electric current. If the flow of electric current disappears, the magnetic field and the effect emanating from it also disappear.

There are different types of electromagnets depending on the direction of the current and the desired power. Among them we highlight:

circular current electromagnets

DC Electromagnets

rectangular electromagnets

Drive Electromagnets

The simplest electromagnet is a piece of wire wound into a coil. A cylindrical coil with the wire wound in the shape of a helix is often called a solenoid . The ends of the cable are connected to a power source.

#COIL

The electromagnet starts with the coil. The wire is wrapped around a center that usually takes the shape of a long tube. The more loops or turns of wire there are, the more force will be given to the magnet up to a practical limit. Magnet manufacturers typically use a fine varnish-coated copper wire.

#IRON CORE

The solenoid produces a magnetic field by itself. If we fill the space inside the coil with an iron core, the field strength increases up to thousands of times. The atoms on the plate normally have random magnetic orientation and their tiny magnetic fields cancel out, but they magnetically align themselves within the field of the electromagnet, contributing their own magnetism in turning the electromagnet on.

#CURRENT SOURCE

A source of electrical current (direct or alternating) is needed to operate the electromagnet. When electric current passes through the winding of an electromagnet, the iron core becomes magnetized.

Now you know more about the world of electromagnets and you know what parts they are made of.
