What is an alternator?
An alternator is a device capable of transforming mechanical energy into electrical energy (alternating current), thus providing current to all electrical systems of machinery.
Among the pieces that make it up we find two key elements:
- The rotor: it is the moving part of the alternator. It is connected directly by means of a pulley coupled to the motor and is in charge of creating the magnetic field.
- The stator: fixed conductive element that reacts to the magnetic field and generates electric current.
Alternators were not known until the 1960s, as dynamo generators were previously used to power electrical current in machinery and vehicles. This change was due to the high need for electrical energy.
